We all know that the morning plays a major role in setting the tone for the day ahead. Here are our ten favorite energy boosting morning rituals that will prepare your body and mind for whatever the day may bring.
1. Drink a glass of hot lemon water
Apart from being a good source of vitamin C and a great way of flushing out toxins in the morning, it balances the PH levels in the body, reduces pain and inflammation in joints and knees and helps nourishing brain and nerve cells.
2. Wake up earlier and get out of bed at the same time each morning
The ideal time to wake up is in conjunction with your circadian rhythms, if possible of course. Besides having more time for your morning rituals, studies have shown that there are other benefits from waking up an hour or two earlier in the morning. For example, it has been shown that sleeping early and waking up early tend to be more optimistic and can anticipate and solve problems more efficiently than the norm.
3. Do a few yoga poses
Yoga is a calming and healing art no matter what time of day you do it, but there is something about morning yoga that makes you shine through the whole day. Yoga in the morning gets your blood flowing and helps wake the muscles in your body for the day ahead.
4. Gratitude and Affirmations
Feeling gratitude and appreciation for those little signs and moments of joy happening in your life is probably one of the most overlooked or underestimated rituals. The real power of gratitude is that it makes you pick out and focus on what is working in your life, it is selectively positive, reinforcing happiness and positivity by shedding light on those awesome things, big or small that are a part of your life.
5. Listen to uplifting music or audiobook OR read personal development/motivational readings for 5-10 minutes
Starting your morning with music you love or a book you find inspirational or motivational will give you something to look forward to in the morning, and sets you up with the right mindset to start the day. You can adjust your music for the type of day you want to have, whether you need something that will pump you up or something more soothing.
6. Meditate for a few minutes
Sit and clear your head for a few minutes. There is no right way to mediate so develop your own personal style (a few examples can be found here). Choose a position you find comfortable, decide if you’d like music or not. You can get benefits from just a few minutes of meditation and you’ll see in marked improvement in the upward trend your days start to take.
7. Smile at yourself in the mirror for 30 seconds
What you’re doing here is basically checking in with yourself, giving yourself that look of determination that you’ll need to make it through the day and accomplish all your goals.
8. Writing down your three most important tasks
Start your day by identifying and writing down the three most important tasks that you need to complete that day. These tasks should be ones that support long-term goals that are aligned to your purpose, passion, or general direction in life. Identifying and writing down your most important tasks in the morning, helps you focus your day and life according to what is essential. You therefore simplify your life by applying your focus and energy on what really counts.
9. Earn your shower
While I am always an advocate of a morning workout, studies have shown that a 20-30 minute cardio workout will have many benefits for your mind and body. You’ll feel lighter, fresher, and more energized all day.
10. Have a healthy balanced (and low sugar) breakfast
While everyone’s body is different, try to avoid sugary foods and instead experiment with high-energy foods that have a good balance of healthy fats, carbs, and protein, as well as nutrient packed foods. Keep in mind that food intake in the morning can be one of the biggest factors that will set the tone of the day, so it is so important to find out what really works for you.
