My number 1 tip for busy women looking to make working out a part of their lives is to plan ahead, and a major part of planning ahead is packing your gym bag so that you always have what you need whenever you find the time to get your workouts in. This method allows you to stop in for a workout (class or otherwise), freshen up, and be back to the rest of your day quicker than you ever anticipated. I personally keep a stocked gym bag with me at (almost) all times. I love using a gym bag that has lots of pockets and compartments to keep my clean clothes separate from my post-workout sweaty clothes, and my liquids and makeup separate from everything else.
My gym bag always includes the following: Klorane dry shampoo, hair brush, deodorant, toothbrush & toothpaste, makeup remover wipes, razor, underwear*, socks*, electrolyte tabs (I personally love Nuun), and some easy quick to apply make-up. I personally have an extra set of each of these items that stays in my gym bag at all times. This eliminates the need for unpacking/repacking every day/night and also makes I’ll never end up in a situation where I forget an essential item such as deodorant or underwear (or mascara, I’ll admit I can be a little girly). Dry shampoo is also a great trick after class when you don’t have as much time to shower and get ready, but don’t want to head out for the rest of the day with wet hair. I love to use the electrolyte tabs before a tough workout to make sure my body is hydrated and balanced to perform well.
* I personally love to workout in the morning, so I pack my clothes for work the night before so I am ready to go bright and early. In addition to the items listed above, I make sure to pack the outfit I need for the day including socks and underwear. The pairs I keep in my bag are meant for those emergency situations where I may have forgotten to pack those items for the day!
Now, I know my men out there are not as open to carrying a gym bag each and everyday as the women out there may be. For men, I recommend packing 5 sets of gym clothes Sunday night/Monday morning and bringing them to work for the week all at once. This way, if you prefer to workout either at lunch or after work, you don’t need to worry about carrying your workout gear to and from work each and every day.
Part 2: My favorite easy to pack, non-perishable snacks
Besides packing your gym bag so that you always have your post-workout essentials, I also recommend packing non-perishable snacks (either in your gym bag or otherwise, totally a personal preference) so you always have a healthy option easily available when hunger hits during the workday, after your workout, and for those moments when the post workout hanger is real. My favorite snacks of the moment are: Krave Jerk, Quest Protein Bars (the new oatmeal chocolate chip is unreal), trail mix, raw unsalted almonds, and Elemental Superfood Crumble.
