Happy Monday!! I am still on such a high from this weekend's Instagram Wellness Meetup w/ so many of you beautiful ladies! I always love getting to know you all in person, chatting about our real lives behind IG, and trying new wellness spots in NYC, so all in all, it was a pretty perfect day. To keep this happiness high going all week, I am focusing on ways to make myself happy and brighten my day, every day, no matter what else may be going on around me, especially with work, overall busyness and anxiety, and when things come up unexpectedly that may throw me off track. Personally, I need this reminder (a lot), especially lately. Today, I'm sharing my top ten tips for making every day a happy day and showing all you loves how you can truly be in control of your own happiness.
Be grateful: Take a few moments to recognize all that you have, whether it's something big like your health or your family or something small like getting the last spot in your favorite workout class. Being grateful helps cultivate positivity, which makes you feel more satisfied and content. Research shows that people who are thankful for what they have are better able to cope with stress, have more positive emotions, and are better able to reach their goals. Even more, keeping a gratitude journal or list, where you actively write down exactly what you're grateful for each day, has been linked to happier moods, greater optimism and even better physical health.
Connect with your friends and nourish your relationships: Sometimes our friends, families or partners know us better than we know ourselves, and taking time to catch up, even if it's a five-minute phone call, can remind us not only the things in our lives we are grateful for, but can also help us identify exactly what it is that we may be upset over and how and why we are reacting to a situation that way. Additionally, research shows spending social time with friends and loved ones generally makes people much happier.
Put aside 15 minutes to an hour a day to do you: Whether it's getting some alone time, listening to your favorite playlist, talking a walk, cooking at home, or a creative music or artistic hobby, even small amounts of time doing something you enjoy will fill you up with joy.
Go workout: Sweating and pushing yourself during exercise releases all those happy hormones so you feel good during and after your workout. I mean, don’t we all know that when you workout your body releases endorphins, endorphins make people happy, and happy people just don’t kill other people?!?
Look through your old photos: If you're having a tough time and need a super quick way to change your mood, grab your phone and look at all your old favorite pictures and videos. Being reminded of some of your favorite times and people, can quickly help you change your mood.
Breathe and Stretch: If you need a little mood boost that you can get anywhere, do some yoga or some stretches. Alleviating tension in your body will make your mind and body feel more relaxed (just think about the post-massage bliss you love).
Do a good deed or give someone an unexpected gift: Making someone else’s day, is a sure way to brighten your day as well. This can be something small such as buying a coffee or bagel for the homeless man that is always outside your office, buying a coffee for the person in the line behind you at Starbucks, or sending a card to a friend.
Do one thing every day that puts your closer to your dream/goal: If you feel that every day you are getting yourself one day closer to exactly where you want to be in life, life in general will just feel better. You will feel like each day has true meaning and purpose and you’re less likely to get distracted or upset when you encounter an obstacle or hiccup in the day to day.
Say “no”: Basically, just don’t do things that don’t make you happy and don’t be afraid to put yourself first.
Smile and choose to be happy: Even if you're not feeling it, sometimes just making the decision to be in a good mood and telling yourself to smile can actually make you feel better.
