TSC: Who are you? Name? Age? Where do you live? Married/kids? Occupation?
SA: My name is Shelby Albo and I'm based in New York City. I work in the traveI industry and am a certified Travel Specialist, specifically for Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tahiti. I am a big fitness enthusiast, taking classes all over the city (and world) but I am also an instructor at The Bari Studio and love inspiring people through their workouts. I recently started a blog, writing about how to stay active while traveling - TravelFitLove.com. I am so grateful to combine my passions, and make them my professions.
TSC: When did fitness first become a part of your life? Have you always been an athlete? Did you start working out as an adult? Did you workout earlier in life and start up again? If so, what and why?
SA: I grew up as a dancer so have always been "moving" and working with my body. I considered myself more of an artist than an athlete. It wasn't until my senior year of college when I became certified in Pilates that I became a part of the "fitness scene". Which was nothing like it is now.... I moved to Australia after college and taught reformer and dance classes in the fitness community. Once I moved to NYC and started taking the variety of classes offered here and I have seen my body change and become stronger than the dancer I was.
TSC: What is your current workout routine? How many days a week/hours a day do you workout? What types of workouts do you do? All one type or switch it up?
SA: I love ALL types of workouts. I also love writing about my experiences and sharing them because I think it is so important for people to find something that they ENJOY doing. Otherwise, it doesn't "stick". (Check out studio reviews on TravelFitLove.com under "Health and Wellness") I typically take a class in the morning before starting my work day and then I teach in the evening, where I also get a chance to sweat. I try and do something different each day - from spin to Pilates to Trampoline. Changing it up is also a great way to trick the muscles and get better results.
TSC: How do your prioritize fitness and wellness in your (busy) life?
SA: I always make a point to schedule my workouts the week prior. Just like a business meeting, I make sure it's a part of my day. My husband is also very active so even if it's a Sunday workout date before brunch, we make a point to prioritize a healthy lifestyle.
TSC: Why is working out/fitness important to you and your lifestyle?
SA: It's important to me because of how it makes me feel. I know from past experience that if I go a few days without working out, my energy shifts. That's especially why I have incorporated ways to stay active in my travels. Maybe it means a city bike tour rather than a bus tour.... I can tell when I'm lacking those endorphins so now, I try to not let that happen. I make a point to have a workout in my "itinerary".
TSC: What other aspects of healthy living do your incorporate in your life? Wellness? Sleep routines? Meal prep? Favorite healthy places to eat out/recipes readers should try?
SA: My husband and I go food shopping every Sunday and spend the afternoon food prepping. This allows for time together, a healthy lifestyle, less stress during the week to cook and it's a money saver too! We also make a point to be in bed by 10pm. We will catch up on a show together and just unwind, also allowing for 7-8 hours of sleep. My mind and body needs a good night of sleep.
TSC: If you could share one thing with readers of The Sweat Chronicles what would it be?
SA: Love what you do!! As far as working out, find something you enjoy!! I used to go to the gym but sometimes it's hard pushing yourself - I have found that classes are so much more fun for me!! If you like it, you're more inclined to do it. When it comes to traveling, you don't need to loose that healthy routine on the road. Sure, you're going to indulge a little more, and have that extra glass of wine... so why not wake up for a workout or do a city walking tour that day.
