The last few weeks I have been proud that my workouts, sleep and food choices have been getting back on track and that I am re-gaining many aspects of my wellness routine that I had lost for a while I had been sick and around the holiday earlier this month. Today though I realized one major part of my routine where I have seriously been slacking - drinking enough water. While the experts may go back and forth on exactly how much water we each need per day (and obviously this depends on so many factors - age, activity level, sex, etc.) all experts agree that drinking enough water is a crucial component of keeping our bodies and minds operating the best they can. Since I know how easily I forgot how vital drinking water was for my own wellness, I figure I can't be alone. So here are some of the top benefits of drinking water and staying properly hydrated:
Increases Energy & Relieves Fatigue & Increases Brain Function: Since your brain is mostly water, drinking it helps you think, focus and concentrate better and be more alert. As an added bonus, your energy levels are also boosted. Studies have also shown that fluid loss is detrimental to mood, concentration, and working memory.
Maximize physical performance: If we do not stay hydrated, our physical performance can suffer. Dehydration can have an effect if you lose as little as 2% of your body’s water content. Science has shown that this can lead to altered body temperature control, reduced motivation, increased fatigue and make exercise feel much more difficult, both physically and mentally.
Promotes Weight Loss: Water removes by-products of fat, reduces eating intake, reduces hunger, and raises your metabolism. Drinking water half an hour before meals is the most effective, as it can make you feel more full. Even more, drinking cold water forces your body to use additional energy (calories) to heat the water to body temperature.
Flushes Out Toxins: Drinking water helps your body get rid of waste through sweat and urination, which reduces the risk of kidney stones and urinary tract infections.
Improves Skin Complexion: Water can moisturize your skin, keep it fresh, soft, glowing and smooth. Hydration also helps to get rid of wrinkles.
Maintains Regularity: Aids in digestion as water is essential to digest your food and prevents constipation.
Boosts Immune System: If you drink lots of water and stay well hydrated you are actually less likely to get sick. Drinking plenty of water helps fight against flu, cancer and other ailments like heart attacks.
Natural Headache (& Hangover) Remedy: We all know that dehydration can trigger headaches and even migraines. Drinking water can therefore help relieve and prevent headaches (migraines & back pains too!), or at least those caused specifically or in part by dehydration.
Prevents Cramps & Sprains: Proper hydration helps keep joints lubricated and muscles more elastic so joint pain is less likely.
Puts You In A Good Mood: When the body is functioning at its best you will absolutely feel better which will in turn boost your mood. Studies have also shown that dehydration can impair mood, so drinking lots of water is a good way to put you in a good mood instead.
